GUIDANCE LAB DIAMOND WORTH

If you are contemplating purchasing a lab-grown diamond, it may be helpful to explore the typical prices of lab diamonds per carat, the extent to which they are less expensive than natural diamonds, and how these diamonds are appraised. This information can aid in your decision-making process and assist you in determining whether a lab-grown diamond is a suitable choice for you.

What determines diamonds value?

Throughout history, diamonds have been prized as tangible symbols of prestige and wealth. However, like any other commodity, their monetary value has varied over time due to market fluctuations, such as supply and demand.

Similar to gold, silver, and platinum, the value of diamonds fluctuates based on market demand. For example, when new diamond mines are discovered, the increased supply causes diamond prices to drop. Conversely, when the demand for diamonds rises, their value increases according to the laws of supply and demand.

Diamonds are often considered a wise investment because their market value typically remains stable or increases over time due to the limited natural supply. If you purchase a high-quality natural diamond at a fair price and take proper care of it, you can expect to see a gradual rise in its overall value.

In contrast, lab-grown diamonds are less predictable in terms of their resale value. While they are physically and optically identical to natural diamonds, they do not have a finite supply. As a result, they do not offer the same level of resale value as natural diamonds.

Lab diamonds are a good investment?

The scarcity of a product is a significant factor that influences its value, and natural diamonds are relatively rare, making them more valuable than lab-grown diamonds that are readily available. This implies that lab-grown diamonds have a relatively lower resale value compared to naturally-mined gemstones.

However, lab-grown diamonds have numerous appealing advantages that appeal to contemporary consumers. In addition to being visually identical to natural diamonds, these synthetic gems are manufactured using responsibly sourced materials and ethical practices, unlike natural diamonds that may have human rights and ecological concerns associated with them.

To ensure that his natural diamond jewellery meets strict ethical and social standards, we sources our diamonds from reputable and eco-conscious suppliers - complying with the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). This vital worldwide initiative aims to eliminate the trade of "conflict diamonds" used to finance wars, human trafficking, and other harmful activities.

Since lab diamonds are created in a controlled environment, they do not have ethical concerns associated with them. Additionally, they are typically 50% - 70% less expensive than natural diamonds of comparable quality and size. For many, these factors are sufficient to outweigh any reservations they may have about the limited resale value of lab-grown diamonds.

Are lab created diamonds worth anything?

Lab-grown diamonds are almost identical to natural diamonds in every way, and can be quite valuable. However, they are generally not as valuable as natural diamonds. Unlike natural diamonds, which take billions of years to form under intense heat and pressure, lab diamonds are created relatively quickly using advanced technology.

The fact that lab diamonds don't have a limited supply is a key factor in their lower value. In recent years, lab-grown diamonds have seen a decline in resale value due to their increased availability. Natural diamonds, on the other hand, can increase in value based on scarcity and market demand. However, several factors determine the value of a natural diamond, such as its uniqueness, quality, colour, and shape.

Although natural diamonds can increase in value, lab diamonds typically do not appreciate in the same way. As a result, a lab-grown diamond may not bring a significant return on investment. However, many people find the benefits of having a beautiful, affordable lab diamond outweigh the value difference.

LAB DIAMONDS IDENTIFICATION

There are several methods for identifying CVD lab-grown diamonds. However it's important to note that none of these methods are foolproof, and a combination of techniques is often used to ensure accurate identification. Additionally, it's always best to consult with a trained professional who has experience in diamond identification before making any purchasing decisions.

MICROSCOPES

When viewed under a microscope, CVD diamonds exhibit unique strain patterns that differ from those seen in natural or mined diamonds.

DIAMOND VIEWER

This high-energy UV radiation machine can differentiate between synthetic and natural diamonds. CVD synthetic diamonds display a strong red fluorescence that is not present in naturally formed diamonds.

INCLUSION PATTERN

While inclusions are common in both natural and CVD diamonds, CVD diamonds typically have less dispersed inclusions when viewed under a microscope.

SPECTROSCOPE

Spectroscope instruments emit light at 737 nm, and when CVD diamonds are exposed to this light, they exhibit strong photoluminescence due to the presence of silicon, which is absent in natural diamonds.

DIAMOND TESTER

Dual electronic diamond testers use thermal and electrical conductivity to determine whether a stone is a diamond or not, but cannot determine whether it is a natural or CVD diamond.

MAGNETISM

Both CVD and natural diamonds can exhibit magnetism, but the strength and type of magnetic properties can differ between the two. Studies have shown that CVD diamonds can exhibit ferromagnetism.

FLUORESCENCE

Using an ultraviolet lamp with both long wave and shortwave emissions, if a diamond displays blue fluorescence, it is not a CVD diamond. While natural diamonds can display fluorescence in various colours, blue is the most common.

Lab grown diamonds resale value.

Many people believe that diamonds are an investment that increases in value over time, but this is a misconception. The truth is that neither natural nor lab-grown diamonds typically hold their value or appreciate over time. Although lab-grown diamonds have experienced a decrease in resale value, this doesn't mean they are of lower quality. In fact, lab diamonds are often less expensive than natural diamonds not because of inferior quality, but because they are more abundant, and their supply chain is shorter.

It's true that lab diamonds typically have a lower resale value compared to natural diamonds. However, it's important to keep in mind that the purpose of buying a beautiful diamond is not necessarily to resell it at a later time. Instead, diamonds often hold great sentimental value and serve as an elegant reflection of personal style or a significant token of love that can be passed down for generations.

The real value of your diamond.

What criteria determine whether a diamond is an investment-grade gemstone, whether it is natural or lab-grown? Typically, it's the combination of colour, cut, clarity, and carat weight that determines a diamond's monetary value now and in the future. Similar to buying a car, the value of a diamond can depreciate rapidly after purchase. However, if you invest in a high-quality diamond piece and take good care of it, you can expect to maintain a relatively consistent value that may even appreciate over time. Nevertheless, it's important to remember that the real value of a diamond lies in the way it symbolises your enduring love story.

At Moh, we exclusively use the highest quality diamonds in our unique jewellery pieces. When these exquisite gemstones are paired with our artfully designed jewellery, they create wearable works of art that hold considerable value, both in terms of monetary worth and emotional significance.
